Former national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki The federal government explained the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) why it would be dangerous to release Sambo Dasuki, the former national security adviser (NSA), from custody. The Punch reports that on Thursday, May 19, the government called two witnesses ‎to oppose a fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed before the ECOWAS court by the ex-NSA seeking his release from the custody. Through its ‎witnesses, the government explained that Dasuki was being held because he constituted threat to national security and was involved in the $2bn arms funds scam. “The position of the defence, which is not controverted by the applicant, is that the arms and ammunition recovered during the search (at Dasuki’s home) are not the only arms and ammunition in the possession of the applicant. READ ALSO: Witness gives details of how former PDP chairman got N300 million from Dasuki “There is fear that he has more. There is intelligence report that some are yet to be recovered. That we fear he has more is a ground to hold him. There are ongoing investigations which are revealing fresh facts concerning him. “The right of an individual cannot supersede the security of a country when there is intelligence report to suspect the conduct of the individual,” the lawyer said. Taking into consideration his central role in the arms deal scandal and the calibre of top politicians that had been fingered in the alleged fraud, the former NSA was also being kept in custody for his own safety. Premium Times reports that Williams Obiora, an operative of the State Security Service (SSS), was one of the witnesses. Led in evidence by the lawyer to the federal government, Damian Agbe, Obiora told the court that Dasuki was arrested and kept in custody for two reasons. “There are two basic reasons why he is still in our custody. One, for his own interest. For his own personal protection because some of the politicians implicated in the arms deal from the intelligence available to us… (he paused). Two, there is intelligence indicating that he can get out of this country thereby evading justice. These are the two main reasons,”  When asked if Dasuki requested SSS for protection, Obiora said he was not aware if the ex-NSA made such request. “He does not need to make a request before we give him protection if his life is in danger, and we owe him a responsibility to ensure he suffers no harm,” he said. However, Roberts Emukperuo, Dasuki’s lawyer, stressed that there was no need to keep his client in protective custody because he had never requested protection from the SSS. The lawyer further averred that the evidence of Obiora alluded to only two reasons why his client was detained. “He did not mention national security. He said for his own safety and so that he won’t escape. He didn’t cite national security concerns. So, the evidence of Obiora did not support the statement of defence because they are at variance,” he added. Having listened to both parties, Justice Friday Nwoke fixed judgement for June 29. In January 2016, Dasuki dragged the federal government before the ECOWAS court asking it to intervene in his detention without trial since December 2015. While hearing Dasuki’s suit challenging his alleged unlawful detention, the federal government was ordered by the ECOWAS court to justify the ex-NSA detention in one day.

CHILD NOT BRIDE

They all said it wasn't that bad. Afterall  all i had to do was lay down on my back for a few minutes and it would be over... I couldn't bear the shame that came with poverty, i must make it some how, anyhow.

Nobody warned me about VVF. Nobody told me about the disease that could destroy a girl's future. I only did it in acknowledgement of my family's sufferings.  Papa died when i was five and mama was immediately betrothed to his younger brother. We lost mama to the cruel hands of death when i was twelve. They didn't tell me what to do, how to handle my six younger ones, they didn't leave a dime behind, not even a goodbye. Papa's younger brother left with his other wives to the city immediately after mama's burial.
We could barely afford my school fees when mama was alive. I was the only one that attended primary school, even with that it was one term in, two terms out but at least i could read and write.
And that's how my parents left with nothing to their name. Nothing to keep the family going after disaster struck. I wept. I panicked. I begged. Nobody was ready to help. They all said "all will be well in the end, haliza". But was this ever going to end? My 9month old brother fell sick all of a sudden. What next? There was no money for hospital bills, i couldn't even afford the herbs. He died.
In this same squalor and poverty, the two others aged 2 and 3 also died of malnutrition (kwashiokor)... Hmmmm. I couldn't sit still anymore. There had to be a way out. Some way, anyway. That's when i met Alhaji.
I met Alhaji Mustapha 6months after mama died and 3months after the simultaneous death of my 3 youngest ones.
I was begging as usual by the roadside. I had moved from street to street and had barely realised 100 Naira. I was tired, famished and frustrated. Then i saw this black jeep coming towards my side of the road, i ran out of fear, thinking it was one of those policemen who chased beggars off the streets.  The car came after me and honked. I stopped out of fear. The driver came down and asked me to come in, Alhaji wanted to talk to me. Who is Alhaji? I wondered. I went in anyways, a beggar has no choice. Maybe he wanted to help.
The car had sleek, leathery seats, so beautiful! I was awed by the beauty, i didn't even notice the man in Dansiki and cap till he cleared his throat.
"uh..uh...fine girl" he said "I've been watching you for a while now. i was told you lost your parents and you're now taking care of your siblings... Hmmmm... Let me help you out".
I felt so much relief at the sound of the word 'help'. I didn't even bother to ask him how or why... I didn't need to anyway, he told me upfront. He said "I'll like to make you my small wife. Arrangements will be made immediately" and that was it. I told him "No!" and was about to jump down when i heard his sarcastic laughter. He said my siblings and I will die of poverty if i don't do this. He gave me his card and address.
I got down anyways but i couldn't get our little discussion out of my mind.
This was the first person that tried to help, apart from our neighbors and my friends.
When i got home that evening i told Hadiza, my 11year old sister what Happened. She was frightened. She cried. I cried too. But what can tears do?
I couldn't sleep that night. I rolled and rolled and begged sleep to come but no it didn't. By Dawn i had made up my mind. I was going to marry Alhaji. That's the only way to protect and provide for my siblings. It would be selfish of me to hold back and let them suffer..
I went to Alhaji's office that afternoon. In my tattered clothes. I gave him my consent and he told me to get myself ready, his boys were coming to pick me up the next day. He'll get my siblings a comfortable accommodation beside his house and we'll conduct the ceremony the next week..
I told the neighbors and they advised me to tolerate him in bed and be obedient. I was a young girl that suddenly took on the form of a woman. I wondered how Alhaji would be interested in my small body and bare chest.
Now,  one year after. I'm In a nursing home. My siblings visit me every Saturday. Alhaji has traveled out. I was diagnosed with Vaginal Fistula. I stink. I can't hold urine or faeces. i mess the whole place. I live on a tube. I carry it everywhere. I didn't get a chance to grow. I don't know how much time i have left.

The Perceived End of Senator Bukola Saraki

– The name, Bukola Saraki, Nigeria’s Senate president is now a household name in the present political dispensation – The nation’s number three man is one of the very few political officer holders who finds himself currently between the devil and the deep blue sea – Politically, crucifixion is a word which means the end is in sight for the political career of a person – The disobedience of the first law of power which is never outshine the master could probably be the behemoth that wants to devour the former governor of Kwara state Crucifixion is seldom used in political parlance. This is because any politician who is preyed upon, may kiss the dust and be sent into political oblivion. The reasons why one politician comes for the others jugular vein are basically on anti-party activities, loyalty to the establishment or the political cabals, territorial expansionism and dominance as well as continued relevance and perpetual servitude for those below the rung of the ladder of authority. READ ALSO: 6 people who will cry so much if Saraki is removed As pressure continues to mount on the Senate president, so also it seems he is getting near the tether end of his leadership role at the upper chambers due to his case of charges of false assets declaration at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), because Michael Wetkas, a detective of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Wednesday, May 11, said Bukola Saraki, the Senate president declared a property that did not exist. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Senate president, Bukola Saraki The number of people who wants the hangman’s noose around Saraki’s neck are numerous, as it is not just only here in Nigeria that there are reactions that he should throw in the towel when the ovation is loudest. In a reaction to why the former Kwara state governor should vacate his seat, it was exclusively gathered from a Nigerian in the USA by the name Aminu Dabo of the University of Maryland Eastern Offshore, who stated on Friday, May 6 saying: “Compared to the millions of Kwara state citizens he (Bukola Saraki) duped Billions of Naira. He (Bukola Saraki) got away with corruption in Kwara state. Now he (Bukola Saraki) and his devil want to rape and drown Nigeria into Stone Age? “If Saraki do not go to jail for a long haul, the fight against corruption has failed in Nigeria. Nigerians need not to look at his situation, but what he did. And the man and his side kicks went and spent billions more on luxury vehicle despite the hardships Nigerians are facing. Only a corrupt mind and an enemy of Nigeria will sympathise with these thieves.” 1. Political subterfuge The different intrigues in Nigeria’s politics is second to none globally. There are so many mudslinging and horse-tradings depending on the situation of things on the ground. READ ALSO: Saraki’s unending CCT trial and the powers-that-be No politician who is under scrutiny will categorically states if he will survive the onslaught against him or not. The Senate president is now under the radar by political watchers. Both is political allies and foes are keenly watching as events unfold. There was a report a few weeks ago that the governing party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been lining up the possible replacement in case Saraki sinks eventually. There was a time the national chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun himself was reported to have said he will not fold his arms and watch a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator succeed the former Kwara state governor. There was even reported stories of at least 77 Senators known as G77 are aligning with Saraki to see that he is protected and prevented from being eased out of his seat. According to Vanguard of Saturday, April 23, it disclosed that the G77 came into existence to frustrate any gang up against Senator Saraki’s leadership of the Senate. The gospel truth now is that no outside observer of the Saraki and CCT episode can really say where the bob of the pendulum will swing to at the end of the day. 2. Omo Baba Oloye is waxing stronger Saraki’s father was known as Baba Oloye, while he is the Omo Baba Oloye. Despite all cudgels hauled at the Senate president, he seems less worried and concerned about all these. It is unbelievable to know that Saraki has escaped all the missiles thrown at him. Some of co-Senators like Senator Abdulfatah Buhari from Oyo state had once advised Saraki to toe the path of honour by resigning. The Oyo state born Senator urged Saraki to be man enough to take a bow basically because of the latter’s alleged involvement in the Panama Paper brouhaha. He said the Prime Minister of Iceland who was implicated in the Panama Paper scandal had resigned. Thus the need for Saraki to resign. It was also another short victory for Omo Baba Oloye of Kwara state because, in another bungled claim, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday, May 10, failed to substantiate allegation of anticipatory buying of property against Bukola Saraki, the President of the Senate, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal The way and manner in which the Senate is swimming against the tidal waves that ought to drown him is unimaginable. 3. Another political hoax? A particular Lagos politician quit politics due to what he saw at a hotel he visited shortly after an election between his role model and a PDP governorship candidate in one of the states in the Southwestern part of the country against the APC, whose candidate finally won the election to become the governor at the last year general. What made him leave the PDP was very straightforward. After his candidate lost the election, that is the PDP candidate lost the elections, he decided to go to one of the popular hotels in Lagos to chill out. Upon entering the hotel and moving to the executive part meant for VIPs, he was bemused, as he saw his role model and the PDP candidate, with only his singlet sharing jokes and laughing out loudly with one of the APC chieftains. He was dumbfounded for a few minutes as he could believe what was happening. He left the hotel in annoyance, without enjoying what he came to do in the first place. He vowed never to support of any politician again in his life. The shortly narrated event above and similar ones are common in politics all over the world. The Saraki issue could be a distraction game being played by the ruling government to sway the attention of Nigerians from asking pertinent questions relating to how they want to give Nigerians what they promised during electioneering campaign, which are welfare and security of lives and properties. 4. Where lies Buhari’s interest Can any Nigeria say this is where President Buhari’s interest lies in the Saraki episode. Although, the president has been mute regarding commenting on the travails of the Senate president. But the popular opinion is that Buhari is not comfortable with the former Kwara state governor continued steering of the red chambers of the National Assembly. Feelers are that the president is in tune with the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is reported not to be convenient with Saraki due to the calculation based on 2019 presidency. In addition, the president should have an interest in Saraki’s case. As the number one citizen of the country, all the bulk stops at his table. Maybe the president himself has become at expert in political games, which include smiling at your perceived political enemy and digging his grave immediately he departs, or holding nocturnal meetings and having clandestine agenda, while having breakfast and lunch with him when everybody is around. No politician will feign ignorance about this style of playing politics, especially when it has to do with interest, as there is no permanent enemy or permanent friend in politics, but permanent interest. 5. The voice of Jacob and the hand of Esau The judge of the CCT, Danladi Umar was at a time said to be allegedly involved in a N10 million corrupt practice. The Senate president himself said he was not comfortable with Justice Umar continuing as the chairman of the CCT. Saraki believes he will not get fair hearing and judgement of the young, fair-skinned Umar continues his case. In spite if the EFCC being around to investigate Umar, the latter has not been entangled by the cobweb trap set for him. Saraki could think there are some people behind Umar who wants to nail him in his coffin alive. 6. Only three big nails are needed for crucifixion Literally, the parts that are nailed in pictorial crucifixion are the two hands separately with two nails and and both feet, with just a single nail. Therefore, these are three nails. Currently, it seems only two nails are available to nail Saraki. And just one nail is even being used to nail him. The two available nails are is case of charges of false assets declaration and money laundry and the Panama Paper scandal. The only being used is the CCT, which has been coming from all directions to see Saraki is judged according to law. Another conundrum here is that if Saraki finally drowns or sinks, as the case might be, as he is facing trials, he could become the first politician, who was politically crucified with just a single nail, because in the real sense of it, at least two nails are needed to nail someone’s political enemy, unless that political enemy is a green horn or a neophyte in the game of Nigerian politics. Read more: https://www.naij.com/818225-time-bukola-sarakis-crucifixion-finally-arrived.html

Senator Dino Melaye of APC issues 7 days ultimatum to President Buhari

Dino Melaye says he will mobilise Nigerians in a ,match against the government if the old pump price is not reverted – The Senator representing Kogi West, has given President Muhammadu Buhari a 7-day ultimatum – He has asked the APC national chairman to advise Buhari accordingly Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Senator Dino Melaye is set to mobilise Nigerians against the government if something is not done about the duel price. President Buhari has got 7-days to revert fuel price to the old pump price or stand the risk of civil disobedience taking over Nigeria. According to reports, Dino Melaye has threatened to mobilise Nigerians against the Buhari-led administration if it does not revert to the old pump price of petrol within seven days. Melaye, who participated actively in the #OcuppyNigeria protests, which forced the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan to shelve the idea of removing fuel subsidy, accused the current administration of going against the campaign promises of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He reportedly asked John Oyegun, national chairman of the party, to advise Buhari to revoke the increment. “My sincere advise is for the National Chairman of our party to suggest that the federal government immediately reverse the announced increase in the pump price of PMS,” he wrote on Facebook. READ ALSO: Bola Tinubu reacts to hike in fuel price “If after seven days from Monday, there is no reversal, I will mobilise Nigerians from all walks of life for the mother of all protest. This is not what we promised Nigerians. “The time is not right and the negative effects will be unbearable. A word is enough for the wise.” Melaye is not the first APC senator to oppose the new price regime in the oil sector. Senator Shehu Sani, the lawmaker representing Kaduna central senatorial district, has also expressed reservation over the hike in fuel price. Sani, a renowned activist, also took part in the anti-subsidy protest in 2012, said: “My position remains unchanged, crystal clear and unwavering; I stand opposed to the removal of petroleum subsidy and I stand opposed to increase in pump price of petroleum products,” he said. “It will do nothing other than add to the suffering and further impoverish the masses of our people. “It amounts to capitulation and outright deception for those of us who led millions of people, out in the street, few years ago, against pump price increase and against subsidy removal to now give economic excuses to justify same. “The moral flag we raised in the past is now the scale of justice to measure the degree of our conscience in the present.” In the same vein, Alhaji Balarabe Musa has reacted to the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government noted that the move spells doom for the country. The subsidy was removed on Wednesday, May 11 following a meeting between the minister of state for petroleum and stakeholders of the petroleum industry. Kachiku said the decision to remove subsidy and deregulate the sector was born out of necessity. He said the removal would open the market and solve the problem of scarcity. He said the removal will positively affect the economy as it will allow government focus on other sectors like power generation and security. NAN reports that Musa who is also a national leader of the Peoples Redemption Party said on Thursday, May 12 in Kaduna that the action of the government would bring more pain to Nigerians. “We are in trouble; the already bad situation will get worse and it will worsen the poverty level of Nigerians,” he said. Musa assured that he would support the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in its plan to stage a mass protest to compel the federal government to reverse the decision. The politician alleged that the fund garnered from the subsidy removal would also benefit a few persons at the top. Meanwhile, Jide Jimoh, the lawmaker representing Mainland constituency in the House of Representatives, has noted that the increment in pump price was aimed at the greater good of Nigerians.  “The increment in fuel price is not to put Nigerians into any form of hardship but to bring change that will bring lasting enjoyment afterward,” he said. “I believe Nigerians will smile and there shall be light at the end of the tunnel but Nigerians must understand that President Buhari meant good for the country,” Jimoh buttressed. Calling on all Nigerians to be patient, the lawmaker said: “What is of necessity now is for all of us to rationalise and be creative and at the end of the day allow wisdom to prevail in this circumstance. “I know Buhari has promised us very good things but the rate at which Nigerians are now getting involved like queuing up endlessly without having the petroleum product is not good for us.” Jimoh called on the federal government to embark on massive provision of buses and rejuvenation of rail lines to cushion the effect.
